Ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection is designed to cut power quickly when electricity takes an unintended path — including through a person. That speed is why GFCI devices are so important in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, and outdoors.

How a GFCI helps

A GFCI monitors current leaving and returning on a circuit. If it detects an imbalance that suggests current is leaking to ground, it opens the circuit. That response can prevent a serious shock in wet or damp locations.

Protection may come from a GFCI receptacle with Test and Reset buttons, or from a GFCI breaker in the panel that protects the whole circuit.

Where you should expect protection

Modern homes typically need GFCI protection in areas where water and electricity can meet. Exact requirements depend on the code edition in force when the work was done and when upgrades are made. If a wet-area outlet lacks obvious protection, ask an electrician to verify how the circuit is protected.

Test them regularly

Press the Test button according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then use Reset to restore power. A device that will not trip, will not reset, or trips with nothing plugged in should be evaluated. Do not bypass a GFCI that keeps tripping — find the cause.

If one GFCI controls downstream outlets, a single failed device can take out several receptacles at once. An electrician can map which outlets are protected by which device.

Call an electrician when

  • A GFCI will not test or reset
  • Protection is missing in wet locations
  • Outlets spark, feel warm, or show discoloration
  • Outdoor or garage receptacles fail after rain or use of power tools

GFCI devices wear out over time. Replacing an aging device is a straightforward safety upgrade when installed correctly.
